Cost-effective Web-based Media Synchronization Schemes for Real-time Distributed Groupware
نویسندگان
چکیده
A multitude of application domains benefit from synchronized multimedia content presentation and playback across spatially scattered client stations. Online remote tutoring, telework and teleconferencing, and the nonco-located synchronous browsing through a digital photo album are merely some examples of potential use cases, which are referred to collectively as real-time distributed groupware. This paper presents five concrete schemes that realize media synchronization over the Web. The proposed techniques have been implemented and experimentally validated as part of the synchronous MediaSharing (sMS) service, a framework which grants geographically dispersed users the ability to share and synchronously consume digital pictures and video clips. All five schemes are completely Web-compliant, achieve relatively loose synchronization accuracy, and can be categorized as being non-distributed in the sense that they require centralized coordination. Besides being technically compared, the synchronization solutions are subjected to a high-level assessment in terms of their infrastructural requirements and the thereby associated necessary operational expenditure.

Realising Real Time Multimedia Groupware on the Web
Real-time audio and video conferencing has not yet been satisfactorily integrated into web-based groupware environments. Conferencing tools are at best only loosely linked to other parts of a shared working environment. This is mainly due to the special Quality of Service (QoS) requirements that these types of resources demand. This paper describes an approach to overcoming this problem by inte...

Communication Door: Real-Time Communication Middleware By Masahiro TABUCHI,* Kazuaki NAKAJIMA,* Akiko KAWAMOTO,* Takashi OSHIBA* and Shujun YOSHIZAKA* We describe a real-time communication middleware system that enables solution providers to construct various applications, such as web conferencing systems and IP-based call centers. The middleware platform, called Communication Door, is a web-ba...
متن کاملDeveloping Guidelines for Effective On-line Collaboration
In the last few years, the Web has been increasingly used to not only share existing knowledge, but to create opportunities for knowledge generation through collaboration. Collaboration can occur asynchronously (for example, through e-mail) or synchronously using software packages known as "groupware." Groupware packages (e.g., Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, Netscape Suite Spot, and Novell Gr...
متن کاملCSCW - WCSC: Computer-Supported Cooperative Work - What Changes for the Science of Computing
Computer-supported cooperative work environments change some of the underlying beliefs about solutions that have been built for distributed computing. Electronic mail and file transfers have worked efficiently and effectively by breaking the information to be transferred into packets and reassembling the packets at the destination. This is not a viable solution for handling shared real time dra...
متن کاملComputer Network Time Synchronization using a Low Cost GPS Engine
Accurate and reliable time is necessary for financial and legal transactions, transportation, distribution systems, and many other applications. Time synchronization protocols such as NTP (the Network Time Protocol) have kept clocks of such applications synchronized to each other for many years. Nowadays there are many commercial GPS based NTP time server products at the market but they almost ...
